apprentiships: we will not be taking on
fulltime interns in 2008, but will have
need for periodic week-long stints during crunch times. if

mamashöe farm is a very small
family-run operation with an infinite amount
of things to be done and an infinite amount of things to
learn. we're always looking for help from good folks who are
interested in the philosophies embodied at mamashöe world
headquarters. below is an excerpt from a recent
apprentiship advert we published. read it over and if
you're interested, get in touch.
1) Types of enterprises and acreage: 25 acres -
pigs, goats, chicken, ducks/geese, turkey, orchard,
vegetables, mushrooms, aquaculture, bees - emphasis is
placed on diversity, low energy inputs, systems
integration/symbiosis, organics, biodynamics, permaculture
design principles
2) Types of work to be done, including special projects:
daily chores (milking, egg collecting,
feeding/watering/moving animals), tending vegetables from
seed->harvest, caring for orchard (pruning, mulching,
etc.), new tree/shrub plantings, infrastructure
construction/upkeep (barn, greenhouse, coldframes,
raisedbeds, root cellar, irrigation systems), forestry,
cooking/food preservation (including herbal tinctures,
pickling, wine making, soap making)
3) Number of
apprentices and dates when needed: 1, maybe 2
4) Describe
accommodations, room, board, and stipends, if applicable:
there are many options/scenarios (tenting with
bathroom/kitchen privs, cabin on
site), we are flexible/reasonable, will depend on
individuals involved, pls contact for more information
5) List educational, recreational, and additional farm
opportunities: thousands of acres of
conservation land, some of which abutts MSWHQ, so there're
oportunities for outdoor activities (boating, hiking,
swimming, etc.) - MSWHQ also hosts artist retreats, wendell's
30 min from amherst/northhampton area, 60 or so miles from
Boston, near NH, VT, Berkshires - other farms/communities in
area for tours
what you can expect: you will get
exposure to and experience with an unusually wide variety of
enterprises and skills, including care for the plants and
animals outlined on this site, carpentry and
building skills (shelters, barns, greenhouses, coldframes),
forestry, aquaculture, food and medicine preparation, plant
identification/botony, general improvisational problem
solving skills, etc. in exchange, you will be expected to
work hard, quickly, intelligently, and have fun doing it!
entitled rich kids who like the *idea* of sustainable living
with no work ethic need not apply.
